Frequently asked

Mosaic-making uncertainties resolved

Short, honest answers to the questions hobbyists ask most, with links to the deeper guides.

How many photos do I need for a photo mosaic?

A few hundred unique photos can work with spaced repetition. For wall-sized prints, 1,000 or more tiles gives a richer surface with fewer visible repeats. See tile libraries.

Which photos make the best main image?

Images with strong contrast, a simple background and one recognisable subject. Shrink the photo to your tile count; if you still recognise it, it will work.

Is it acceptable to repeat tiles?

Yes. Set a minimum distance between identical tiles, often eight to ten cells, and inspect at full zoom for clusters.

How much colour tinting should I use?

Between 10 and 25 percent suits many personal projects. Higher values strengthen the main image but make tiles look less like themselves. See colour matching.

What tile size should I choose for printing?

Work from viewing distance: around 5 mm for desk viewing, around 2 cm for wall prints seen from three to four metres, larger for banners.

What resolution should I export?

Around 200 to 300 pixels per inch for close viewing, or at least 150 to 250 pixels per tile so each photo stays sharp. See final output.

Why does my mosaic look muddy or grey?

Usually the tile library lacks very dark and very light images, or the main image has low contrast. Add tonal extremes and increase contrast slightly.

Can I make a mosaic on a phone?

Phone apps suit small screens and quick gifts. Large prints usually need desktop software that can export very large files.

Do I need permission to use other people's photos as tiles?

Ask before including identifiable people, especially children, and especially when publishing online or zoomable versions.

Does this website make mosaics for me?

No. We are an independent guide and do not offer image uploads or processing. We explain how to use the tools yourself.
